China Grove
China Grove is on U.S. Highway 87 nine miles east of downtown San Antonio in eastern Bexar County. It was settled around 1900. In the mid-1930s it had a school, a church, and a number of houses. With the expansion of the San Antonio metropolitan area after World War II the town grew gradually. It incorporated in the 1960s, and by 1970 the population was 254. In the 1970s the town name was used as the title of a Doobie Brothers song. In recent years China Grove has experienced steady growth, with the number of inhabitants increasing from 372 in 1980 to 872 in 1990 to 1,247 in 2000.
