History: Caddo and later Cherokee Indians in the area; removed by 1840 when Anglo-American settlement began. County created from Henderson County and organized in 1848; named for member of Texas and U.S. congresses D.S. Kaufman.

FORNEY (25,371) important antiques center, light industrial, commuters to Dallas, historic homes, barbecue cook-off in June.
