History: Coahuiltecan area, then Karankawas and other tribes, finally the Comanches. Mexican and Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1820s. County created, organized, in 1846 from Gonzales, Goliad, Victoria counties; named for Green DeWitt, colonizer.

Yorktown (2,197) agribusiness, oil and gas; library, museum, park, hike/bike trail; Western Days in October; German feasts, spring and fall.

Other towns include: Hochheim (70), Meyersville (110), Nordheim (318), Thomaston (45), Westhoff (410).

Part [2,138] of Yoakum (5,944 total) cattle, leather, meat processing, hospital, museum, Tom Tom festival in June.
